How to Properly Measure a Lampshade

Choosing the right lampshade is a crucial step in achieving the perfect lighting and aesthetic for your space. However, before you get to the fun part of choosing your patterns, begin by properly measuring to determine the size of lampshade that you'll need.

Scenerio 1: You have a beautiful table lamp, but no shade...

1. Measure the Base:

Start by measuring the diameter of the lamp base. This is the widest part of the base, typically where the lampshade will rest. Use a measuring tape or a ruler to measure across the base from one side to the other. 

2. Determine the Height:

 Next, measure the height of the lamp, from the base up to the bottom to the socket where the bulb is inserted. This measurement helps in choosing a lampshade that complements the proportions of the lamp.  

3. Measure the Harp:

The harp is the metal frame that holds the lampshade in place. To measure the harp, start from the bottom of the harp to the top, excluding the finial. This measurement is crucial for ensuring that the lampshade sits at the right height on the lamp.

4. Play with Proportions:

 Proportion is key to achieving visual balance. Ensure that the size of the lampshade complements the lamp base and the overall scale of the room. A few tips:

- Choose a lampshade diameter that is roughly two-thirds the height of the lamp base.

- For larger rooms or statement lamps, consider oversized shades for a bold look

5. Consider Style and Functionality:

Beyond basic measurements, consider the style and functionality of the lampshade you desire. If you want a lampshade that provides ample light, choose a wider diameter. For a more focused and intimate lighting, opt for a narrower design. Additionally, consider the overall aesthetic of your room and choose a lampshade that complements the existing decor.

Lampshades come in various shapes, including drum, empire, pembroke, and more. The shape can significantly impact the overall look of the lamp. Ensure that the chosen shape not only fits the style of your lamp but also enhances the visual harmony of the entire room

1. Measure the Top and Bottom Diameters:

Measure across the lamps shade rings by placing your ruler directly across the center of the circle.  Do this for the top and the bottom. 

2. Measure the Slope:

For lampshades with sloped sides, it's essential to measure the slope. Start from the bottom edge and measure up to the top, following the curve of the slope.

3. Measure the Height:

The height differs from the slope. The measure the height of lampshade, place the shade in a flat surface. Place the ruler vertically next to the shade. Take measurement where the top of the shade is level with the ruler. 

4. Choosing the size of your new shade:

Round measurements to the nearest inch.  The height and is the most crucial measurement - you may go higher buy not lower - to ensure that the new lampshade fits the lamp base.  Find a shade that is closest to your measurements.  We offer our handmade lampshades in 5 different sizes and offer custom shades, too, in any size.
